Sisal rugs are made from agave sisialana plant which is very common in Central America. Sisal fiber is known to be very durable and strong but the fibers of sisal rugs are sensitive to moisture. However, it is not not that delicate to clean because their natural structure makes the dirt to rest loosely in the weave, but it could be tricky due to its sensitivity to moisture. It is not advised to let the spot on sisal carpet for too long since it would cause a permanent damage on the said carpet.

Regular maintenance of sisal rugs is very important to reduce the chance of staining. Here are some practical tips to improve that you can perform on your existing rugs:

First determine if the stain is a liquid stain or dried one. For liquid stains, blot the spilled area with a clean, dry cloth immediately. Remember, the longer the liquid stays on the fiber the harder it can be removed. Take note: DO NOT rub the liquid into the fabric because it might seep deeper into the fibers and can also spread the liquid to a larger area. Apply force straight down and hold until the cloth is saturated or the spill is cleaned. You can also use a small quantity of absorbent powder, sprinkle it on the affected area and let it stay for a couple of minutes. Brush off the residue then vacuum it.

Now, for dried materials or dirt, use a wooden knife to scrape away dried materials that stick to the rug. NEVER apply water or any liquid on the affected area as the dirt can further the damage the sisal fibers over time and eventually cause fraying and other damage. It's important to vacuum thoroughly because moisture applied to trapped dirt will darken that area of the rug.

DIY: Cleaning your Sisal Rugs

Now do you have a sisal rugs stuck on your dining room or any part of your house and it started to become dirty through the years or life of usage and you want to clean it yourself? Well first you need to determine what type of rugs do you have in your home. Is it synthetic or natural sisal rug? If it is synthetic, the usual method to clean it is through hot-water extraction or dry cleaning method as per recommended by the manufacturer of this rugs. Now, for the natural fiber-sisal rugs, the usual recommended way of cleaning it is through dry-cleaning only. It is not recommended that you use steam-clean or wet shampoo. It is because excessive liquid or dampness on the rugs may cause it to shrink or crumple which is not good for rugs appearance.
